The Saddle & Palmetto Postcard Series

Stories from Old Florida

Every month we release a new vintage-style postcard, and every order shipped that month includes it. Twelve cards in the first year, each one picking up where the last left off.

The story follows Wes, a young cow hunter writing home to his sister Mattie from the Peace River cattle country — the cow camps, the open range, and the town that grew up around them.

Card Nº 1 of 12

The Cow Hunt Begins

“Out here a man is judged by his horse, his word, and how strong he takes his coffee.”

Read the letter

Dear Mattie,

Made it to the Peace River country at last. Cabbage palms stand thick as a crowd on market day, and the cattle out here run wild as deer in the scrub. Boss says we start the hunt at Joshua Creek come sunup. The coffee’s black & the fire’s warm — don’t you worry after me.

More from the next camp,
Your brother, Wes
